Current Situation of Mechanical Engineer Education by Low-budget Fused Deposition Modeling 3D Printer

Abstract

Nowadays, fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printers are used in all fields including education, and are particularly widely used in the field of mechanical engineering education because of its advantages for easily creating shapes. The head of this type of 3D printer fuses resin from filament thread material at the nozzle, and the printer moves the controlled head to deposit a thin thread-like resin. For this reason, there are problems such as the anisotropic strength-stiffness characteristics and difficulties in producing thin articles and removing support material after 3D printing. In this report, as a part of project based learning (PBL) education, in order to replace commercial metal parts with ABS resin parts made by 3D printers, 3D CAD and 3D printers are used to design, manufacture and simple strength test the general parts. By the results of this engineering educational activity, not only the advantages but also the disadvantages of 3D printers have become known.
