Abstract

Universities have many missions such as education of students, promoting industries, scientific and engineering researches, and so on. Faculty of Engineering Science, Akita University also has a mission to collaborate with industries in the area as a part of COC (center of community) program. In order to carry out the mission, one of our efforts is to collaborate with local industries and foster students by an educational method called PBL (project based learning). In the program, each collaborating company proposes a subject to be solved by a students’ team and the assigned team tries to make some proposals. The program continues from April through August and finishes at the open symposium inviting all the collaborating companies. Although each team is supervised by a company liaison, a mentor and a TA, proposals should be made by students’ team itself. This program is, of course, a good scheme to foster knowledge, autonomy, communication skills etc. At the same time, the program is useful in encouraging collaborations between local industries, students and the university. Although the program is still under development and improvement, it can be concluded it has promising effects in engineering education.
