Abstract

The objective of this study was to investigate effects of a pimple density of table tennis rubber with pimples structure on the ball rebound behavior using finite (FE) element analyses. The FE model of the sandwich rubber which was composed of a rubber and foam layers was constructed with non-linearity, strain rate dependency, and energy absorption. The high accuracy of their material models has been confirmed by comparing with experimental results. Impact analyses were conducted using the developed models of ball and rubber with different pimple densities. The simulation results of the ball rebound behavior tend to depend strongly on the impulse which is calculated using time histories of the contact force during impact. Especially, the spin rate tends to increase with the pimple density which leads to the magnitude of impulse. It was found that the impulse contributes to the generation of the spin by observing the relationship between the impulse and the deformation behavior during impact.
