Abstract

The phenomena of melting, evaporation, and solidification of laser spots in metal additive manufacturing (SLM; Selective Laser Melting) are fast and complicated phenomena, and modeling is difficult. On the other hand, among the enormous process parameters such as laser power and scan speed, it is necessary to determine the process parameters that balance the cycle time and quality, and it takes a lot of time to set the conditions. In this paper, by using pulse laser illumination we directly observe the powder and spatter scattered by the recoil pressure caused by evaporation. And we investigate the relationship among the obtained images and the process parameters. It was found that the spatter number was related to qualities of single-bead sample and porosity of bulk samples. This observation technique and results will lead to develop a method useful for the process parameter search.
