Abstract

In recent years, demand for carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) has rapidly increase in various industrial fields. Since CFRP has unnecessary parts after molding, it needs to be removed by a machining. Therefore, it was developed a new tool for CFRP machining. The developed tool is electroplated cBN abrasives on an end-mill. First, the CFRP cutting is carried out by the developed tool. However, the cutting by the developed tool causes burrs on the edges because cutting force causes the deformation of the resin. Therefore, cBN abrasives fixed to the flank face of the developed tool grind CFRP. Thus, the developed tool is expected to achieve high efficiency and high precise machining for CFRP by cutting with an end-mill and grinding with cBN abrasives fixed on the tool surface. As a previous study, the CFRP grinding with the developed tool had a rough surface roughness. In addition, the developed tool couldn’t achieve required surface roughness in the airplane field under the derived optimum grinding condition. This is because the number of effective abrasives on the developed tool is smaller than that on the conventional grinding tool. In this report, it was investigated whether it is possible to improve surface roughness by oscillation grinding and required surface roughness could be achieved. As a result, the required surface roughness in the airplane field was achieved under specific conditions.
