Abstract

Based on Japanese energy mix of 2030, the change of the output distribution of a thermal power and a pumped hydro power caused by the introduction of a solar power was estimated using the merit order. For example, in the low electric demand spring days, the power from coal power plants is used for the pumping operation of pumped hydro power during the day time, and an electricity is generated using the pumped water during the night time. And the output of natural gas power plants are greately reduced. Furthermore, the contribution of the operational flexibility of coal-fired power plants to the stability of the power grid was evaluated. In this study, it was shown that the improvement of the operational flexibility of coal-fired power plants and the lowering minimum load could contribute to the reduction of surplus electricity of a solar power.
