Abstract

The strong pressure drag induced by the separation of the flow from the surface of the object is a major factor that greatly reduces the energy efficiency of various fluid mechanical elements. In this study, the effect of suppressing flow separation by applying shallow grooves that are regularly arranged on the surface of the object was verified by CFD analysis and wind tunnel experiments. Using a CFD analysis model in which shallow grooves are machined at equal intervals in the axial direction on the surface of a cylinder with a diameter of 42.67 mm, we pursued groove shape parameters that maximize the drag reduction effect. Based on this result, grooving was carried out in the span direction on the back surface of the wing model, and a remarkable drag reduction effect at a high angle of attack was confirmed by a wind tunnel experiment.
