It is essential to ascertain traction characteristics under actual operating conditions in order to apply a toroidal CVT incorporating a traction drive system to automobiles. This paper first describes the traction characteristics obtained quantitatively over a wide range of conditions by using a 4-roller tester. Furthermore, an attempt was made to obtain the rheological parameters of the fluid by using Evans's isothermal test. The resulting parameters were input into a viscoelastic-plastic model, and a comparison was made between the calculated results and the 4-roller test results. It was found that an accurate prediction of traction characteristics requires the above-mentioned model and consideration of rolling element temperature.
