Surface generation mechanism by burnishing action in machining process has been examined experimentally and theoretically. Experiments were carried out based on the observation of the plastic deformation process of one amplified triangular column made of pure lead under very slow burnishing speed. The plastic flow to the orthogonal direction obtained from the observations agrees approximately with the theoretical values by Hill.'s plastic theory. The plastic flow to the forward direction was also observed. The forward deformation depends on the degree of the interference between the relief surface of the tool and the specimen. The forward deformation was also caused by the relief part of cutting edge radius.
