Abstract

In general grinding process of ball nut, interference between inner-surface of workpiece and wheel-quill occurs because of quill inclination along the lead angle of ball nut. The higher the lead of ball nut, the shorter the available length of ball nut. In the proposed method, quill inclination could be decided freely within angles not to occur the interference, and wheel is formed into the optimum shape by which accurate gothic-arc would be obtained. Method for calculating the optimum wheel shape is reported and a high-lead ball nut is produced by way of trial. It is shown that, in this method, wheel with relatively larger diameter could be used and that would improve grinding condition.
