Abstract
In order to decrease the weight of transport machines, development of steel/aluminum tailored blank is expected. However, it is known as a very difficult problem to weld steel and aluminum. The aim of this study is to develop the tailored blank of steel and aluminum alloy by laser butt welding. To overcome difficulties in welding, some trials of laser welding were carried out on the system of SPCC and A1050-O with the aid of compression stress. Main parameters of this laser butt welding of dissimilar metals were considered as the laser irradiation position, the laser power, the laser pulse frequency, the laser feed rate and the compression stress. Effects and correlations of these parameters were investigated. From this experiment, it was shown that a stronger butt joint than the original pure aluminum could be welded by this method.
