Abstract

Since a polymer material has many advantages to order materials such as easy workability and light in weight, more research and development of the material is required. Polymer material shows a unique phenomenon known as a craze, which consists of fibrils and voids. A fibril is a bunch of molecular chains and a void is a molecular cavity. It is also known that environmental chemicals encourage the growth of the craze. In this study, polycarbonate was adopted as a polymer material and ethanol as an environmental chemical. A photoelastic analysis was conducted in order to observe how the environmental chemicals affect the craze and a crack development.
