Abstract

This paper describes the experimental verifications of optimized high speed thrust air bearings according to two types of objective functions. In the experiment, various bearing characteristics such as stiffness of air film, film thickness, friction toque are measured by using specially designed test rig for a wide range of rotational speed. The experimental results of optimized bearings are compared with that of original spiral groove bearing and it is found that the effectiveness of optimizations is very significant.
