Abstract
There are strong demands on heavy apparatus of power systems to operate with lower life cycle costs and higher efficiency. The materials and mechanics technology contributes to design and system engineering of new machines through structural analyses, experimental techniques, database applications and reliability analyses. Failure mechanism analyses and life assessment methods provide basic tools to perform effective operation and maintenance. Strengthening mechanism analyses and simulation analyses support the development of new materials and optimization of manufacturing processes. Several items are presented here to empower the next generation of the engineers in this field.
