Abstract
The effect of hydrogen on the tensile properties of SUS316 stainless steel are investigated. 0, 5 and 10% pre-strained specimens are exposed to hydrogen atmosphere of 100MPa in pressure at 393K for 400h. It is observed that the tensile strength does not vary but the reduction of area reduces by performing hydrogen exposure. Cup-and-cone fracture occurs in the unexposed specimens. Fracture surface of hydrogen exposed specimens is quasi-cleavage fracture surface in the region from the specimen surface to 200μm. In the inside of the quasi-cleavage fracture area, the fracture surface is covered by dimples. Slip bands are seen in the side surface of unexposed specimens, and many cracks of 300-500μm in length are found in the side surface of hydrogen exposed specimens.
