Abstract

Ceramics are lightweight and excellent in heat resistance and oxidation resistance, and are expected to be put to practical use in structural members that require advanced safety, such as next-generation aircraft engine members. However, it is known that brittle fracture occurs starting from "defects" existing on the surface and inside, and probabilistic fracture behavior is caused depending on the size and shape of the defect. For this reason, even in specimens and structural members made from the same sintered body, the fracture strength varies. In this study, based on the finite element analysis method (A method to create Weibull distribution directly from the strength analysis results based on the information about distribution of microscopic organization), the effect of the sintering temperature on the strength variation of ceramics was predicted. Then, the validity of the finite element analysis method was confirmed by comparing with the experimental results of the three-point bending test.
