Abstract
Depth-sensing indentation system was used to measure the residual stress in the engineered surface of stainless steel. Different with other measurement methods, such as X-ray diffraction_techniques, depthsensing indentation provides a way of accurately measuring residual stresses even with unknown material properties. Comparing the load-depth curves of residual stress existing and stress-free samples, the closed form of expression correlating the level of residual stress with load and depth shifts in the load-depth curves is given. Based on theoretical analysis, a new experimental scheme for determination of the residual stress by indentation is suggested.
