Abstract
The time lag of elderly driver is considerably longer than that of normal driver, and is recognized as a significant risk factor. We have studied safety measures using steer-by-wire steering controller. The influences of time lag to the closed-loop stabilities are alleviated by new designs, which are derived from the explicit consideration of driver model. We have tested these steering controllers through numerical simulations with CarSim, and also with a driving simulator with real-time CarSim. Since our subjects are young, the visual display is delayed to emulate the time lag of older drivers.
