Abstract
The objective of the present study is to investigate the effect of contact load on the friction and wear characteristics of an Al-Si alloy impregnated graphite composite under fretting. Flat-against-ball type fretting wear tests for the composite (disk) in point contact with a bearing steel (ball) were conducted in moist air at a constant amplitude of relative slip. From the results, there are two types of fretting process. In Type A, the coefficient of kinetic friction and half amplitude of relative slip drastically change at a certain time with process of fretting. In Type B, the kinetic friction coefficient and the slip amplitude are constant throughout the test. The cause for the occurrence of the two types of fretting process may be a difference in portion of Al-Si alloy and graphite in the contact area for each test.
