Abstract
It is very difficult to measure contact stresses between metal curved surfaces. At the moment, however, a pressure measurement film enables only small contact stresses to be measured. In the present study, using the pressure measurement films, contact stresses between tooth flanks of spur gears subject to a static load. For this purpose, an experimental apparatus had been developed. Using the apparatus, it was confirmed that the pressure measurement film enables contact stress distribution to be measured. Measuring lower stresses than the rated pressure of the film, however, the measured distribution must be that of metal-film contact. The present paper describes a discussion on the manner for measuring stress distribution of meta-metal contact with the pressure measurement film on the basis of the Hertzian contact theory.
