Abstract
To reduce noise and vibration of spur gears, test gear pairs with several types of modified tooth surfaces are made and tested. The results obtained are as follows: (1) The gear noise is decreased by giving the tooth profile modification and/or tooth trace crowning. (2) High order frequency components of the transmission error strongly affect the gear noise and vibration. (3) The method that can evaluate the noise and vibration characteristics of the modified tooth surface by analyzing the spectrum of the theoretical exciting force curve is proposed.
