Abstract
The restoring moment of a cylindrical boom is examined numerically and theoretically to evaluate the deployability of a boom-membrane structure for small satellites. The results of the finite element analyses show that the restoring moment becomes large when the boom radius decreases and when the center hub radius increases. The dominant parameter of the restoring moment is determined by the theoretical analyses, which is the ratio between the boom radius and the center hub radius. As the results of the theory are in agreement with the results of the finite element analyses, the theoretical analyses are verified.
