Abstract
As part of the development of advanced technology applying the AE method to detect abnormalities on a slide bearing, the authors conducted a numerical analysis to compare the status of an oil film, with that in a failure reproduction test using the proposed method. The maximum stressed section obtained by the numerical analysis coincided with the damaged section obtained in the test. Further, in the area near the minimum limit of oil film thickness derived from the numerical analysis, it appeared that the AE signal varied and damage on the surface of a slide bearing occurred. These facts proved the validity of the proposed numerical analysis method. Further clarified was the fact that the AE method showed a superior potential to detect damage as well as evaluate oil film thickness.
