Abstract
A new brake assist system based on driver's characteristic is proposed in this paper. This paper reports a step of the designing of the brake assist system that the difference in the driver's pedal operation between the normal braking and emergency braking is considered. The result shows that a release velocity at the gas pedal in the normal braking and emergency braking is different. The new system is operated by a detection of the release velocity of the accelerator pedal. The proposed algorithm is evaluated by experiment using driving simulator. The result shows that free running distance is shorter. Eventually, the proposed brake assist system is effective for improving braking distance.
