Abstract
With gantry cranes used for container handling at port areas, their running away and overturning caused by wind have been problems. The main objective of this study is to establish guidelines on wind resistant design of gantry cranes. In this paper, dynamic simulation analysis of a crane receiving wind in which the direction and velocity distribution are constant with time, that is steady wind, was conducted. Crane body behavior and interaction forces between wheels and rails in running away situation were analyzed. Crane may run away under rain and strong wind conditions. In the running away situation, the pitching and yawing behavior of crane occurred. The relation of the behavior to wheel load and lateral load was investigated and also the possibility of wheel derailment was discussed.
