Using an acoustic emission method (AE method), which utilizes the phenomenon of releasing the elastic energy stored inside as elastic waves when the material is deformed or fractured, a full-scale dynamo test bench of brake shoes for railway vehicles was conducted. The correlation with the friction characteristics of the brake shoes was evaluated experimentally. As a result, it was found that the brake shoe materials, which have different tendencies of performance deterioration (down rate) under wet conditions with respect to dry conditions, also have different appearance tendencies of AE waveforms.
