Abstract

The gauge corner cracking occurs to the heat-treated rail of high rail in curve radius of 600 to 800m. If the gauge corner cracking propagates significantly, it will be a possibility of causes rail failure. Therefore, it is expected to affect the safety of the railway. However, countermeasure method of gauge corner cracking occurrence has not been established. The purpose of this study is to investigate rail profile for countermeasure of gauge corner cracking by reducing the contact pressure between wheel/rail. The contact pressure between wheel/rail is reduced by the wear development. Therefore, the possibility of the gauge corner cracking in the worn profile of rail was evaluated. Firstly, in this study, the worn profile of rail was created by analysis of the wear development with using of multibody dynamics software. Secondly, analysis of wheel/rail contact was conducted using created worn profile of rail. The fatigue index was calculated using the analysis results. Then, by comparing the fatigue index, we studyed on rail profile for countermeasure of gauge corner cracking.
