Abstract

Mechanical organ perfusion technology, in which organs are perfused outside the body, is attracting worldwide attention as a technology that supports transplant medicine. This technology can reliably preserve transplanted organs, recover their functions, and evaluate them, and it holds great promise for future in-vitro therapies, organ culture, and even food production. This report introduces the history of organ mechanical perfusion technology, starting from the extracorporeal perfusion device developed by Alexille Carrel, a Nobel Prize-winning surgeon for vascular anastomosis, and Charles Lindberg, an engineer famous for his non-stop crossing.
