Abstract

In Japan, automatic train operation has a longer history than other modes of transportation, having been tested since the Osaka Expo Monorail in the 1970s. Japan was the first country in the world to put unmanned automatic train operation to practical use in 1981 with the new transit systems in Kobe and Osaka, but it must be said that Japan has been lagging behind in recent years. This paper discusses the history of unmanned automatic operation of railways, organized by its architecture, as well as the global situation and progress in Japan.
