Abstract

As an action assignment for the project-based learning course in engineering department of Kanagawa Institute of Technology, space technology related challenge was used. This challenge included designing, analyzing, manufacturing and testing the BBM (bread-board model) of a particular capsule release mechanism which is similar to the one used to release the asteroid sample contained capsule to the earth from the space probe “Hayabusa2” in December 2020. The students are ordered to tackle this challenge satisfying given specification such as release translational velocity of the capsule, release angular velocity of the capsule, mass/size constraint of the capsule within cost limitation and schedule limitation of approximately in four months. To accomplish this project, subsystem teams such as capsule release mechanism subsystem team, capsule subsystem team and capsule motion measurement subsystem team as well as the project manager are organized. The release test of BBM was carried out by dropping the capsule from 3m altitude from the ground and the motion of the capsule is measured and evaluated. The result of several kinds of release mechanisms designed by the students in three years are presented and the educational achievements of this course including team building are shown.
