Abstract
Hypervelocity impact tests were conducted with a 2-stage light gas gun test rig. Impact velocities were up to 5500 ms^<-1> in order to investigate the deformation behavior of target materials caused by hypervelocity impact of a spherical projectile. The deformation behavior was compared with that at relatively low impact velocities. The deformation behavior showed a mechanical property of target material under low impact velocities but showed fracture strength of a projectile of WC at a hypervelocity. Huge material removal by the hypervelocity impact of a projectile was observed at an shallow impact angle for the aluminum specimen.
