Abstract
Purpose: We conducted a literature review to examine if an interprofessional collaboration approach can use nursing care intensity data to provide valuable care information and services.
Method: In August 2022, a literature search was performed using the online search engine of the Japan Medical Abstracts Society with combinations of the following keywords: ‘intensity of nursing care’,‘multi-disciplinary’ and related occupations including ‘physiotherapist’, ‘occupational therapist’, ‘speech-language-hearing therapist’, ‘physician’, ‘administrative staff’, ‘pharmacist’, ‘social worker’, ‘care worker’, ‘registered dietitian’, ‘dental hygienist’, ‘radiologist’, ‘laboratory technician’, ‘clinical engineer’ and ‘care manager’.
Result and Discussion: The literature search revealed 57 original articles, 12 of which were selected as appropriate studies concerning the promotion of multi-disciplinary collaboration. Our findings regarding the selected articles were as follows: while studies on the intensity of nursing care and interprofessional collaboration have been reported since the introduction of intensity of nursing care to the medical service fee system in 2002, nursing care intensity has been used as a tool of the evaluation system to promote interprofessional collaboration since the amendment of medical service fees in 2016. Furthermore, nursing care intensity has already been used for work-load assessment, improving the accuracy of nursing care intensity evaluations and team medical care.
Conclusion: Nursing care intensity has typically been studied from the perspective of nursing professionals. Our literature review showed, however, that some interprofessional collaboration teams have been using nursing care intensity data and systems in their work.
