Abstract

We report the long–term continuation of gait training using a Hybrid Assistive Limb (HAL) in a patient with spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy.

The patient was a man in his 40s. Intensive gait training with HAL was initially performed for 20 minutes per day over five consecutive days, resulting in a marked improvement in walking function.

Subsequently, the intervention frequency was reduced to 20 minutes once per month. However, a gradual decline in gait function was observed.

Resumption of intensive HAL gait training (20 minutes per day for five consecutive days) improved the patient's walking ability. Continued intensive HAL interventions thereafter appeared to support the long–term maintenance of walking function.
