Questionnaire surveys on the Consultation Desks for Oral Implant Treatment have been conducted seven times (2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2023, 2025) since their launch in March 2013. Based on these surveys, the results for 12 years were examined to analyze the activities of such Consultation Desks.
The average response rate of Consultation Desk facilities was 81.9%, equivalent to an average of 59.4 consultations per survey.
The most common consultation topic was treatment received at other clinics, followed by treatment content(surgical and prosthetic methods). Although only available for the 2023 and 2025 surveys, consultations outside the Consultation Desk concerned treatment details(prognosis, warranty, success rates, etc.), totaling 47 cases(27.3%). Regarding anticipated future consultation topics, poor post-treatment outcomes (peri-implantitis, requests for removal, spontaneous loss) were the most common, with 52 cases(28.9%). These consulting patients likely represent advanced stages of peri-implantitis, reflecting an increase in long-term implant patients. Requests to transfer to another clinic were the second most common, with 32 cases (17.8%). This includes cases where the original dentist’s practice closed due to the practitioner’s advanced age. This reflects challenges in Japan’s super-aged society. These findings clearly show the increasing diversity of consultation topics. As patients gain more knowledge through social media information, this diversity is expected to continue growing. To help build implant treatments that patients can trust, our society must continue to enhance the role of Consultation Desks.
