Abstract
Jixueteng, a dried stem of Spatholobus suberectus DUNN, is a traditional Chinese medicine, and is used to improve the circulation of the blood and to enrich the blood cells. To examine an antimicrobial effect of the Jixueteng against oral bacteria, we mixed bacterial suspension of Actinomyces viscosus, Streptococcus mutans, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Fusobacterium nucleatum, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Veillonella parvula or Candida albicans with a water extract of the Jixueteng to calculate a survival rate by a cultural method. As the result, the Jixueteng extract exhibited antimicrobial activities for S. mutans, F. nucleatum, P. gingivalis, V. parvula, and salivary bacteria. These results suggest that ingredients of the Jixueteng extract are available for drug discovery for periodontitis.
