The Basic Act on Allergic Disease Measures was enacted throughout Japan in 2015. The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare published a report called "The Study Group on the provision system for medical care for allergic diseases" in 2017 to ensure appropriate medical care based on scientific knowledge for patients with allergic diseases, regardless of their area of residence. In August 2020, 64 hospitals across 36 prefectures were selected as prefectural center hospitals. A questionnaire survey was administered across these hospitals, and many medical treatments required by the center hospitals for allergic diseases were performed. However, approximately 40% of respondents mentioned that they were unable to provide ophthalmological services. It is necessary to train physicians in the management of allergic diseases and establish a system to evaluate the function of prefectural center hospitals to expand the scope of services rendered by these facilities.
