Abstract
With age, disease or injury the joints in the body can wear out or bones may even fail catastrophically. So, various implants are employed to recover the function of the femur by providing mechanical fixation. However, pain due to the stress concentration in the bone and new fracture are caused, when the implant does not physically suit the patient. For the improvements in design and implementation techniques to be realized, detailed deformation of a femur before and after implantation must be understood. This paper describes the mechanical evaluation method of a femur with complicated structure and shape. The deformation behavior of all views of a femur was simultaneously measured using the holographic interferometry and analyzed using the CAD system. Furthermore, the finite element model which reflects the load of the experimental condition was built by CAD and the deformation analysis was carried out. The result agreed with the holographic analysis. Since this technique can measure the overall structural behavior of a femur, it is also a validation tool for FE model construction.
