Abstract
Physics pictures of axisymmetric instability in Tokamaks with high bata poloidal are discussed. It is found that vertical stability in high beta tokamak is determined by a coupling between the shape of the plasma surface and the Shafranov shift of the magnetic axis. Vertically asymmetric shaping of the plasma cross-section has no critical effect on the vertical stability.
