Abstract
To elucidate the effect of Hassab's operation on residual or recurrent gastroesophageal varices after endoscopic injection sclerotherapy (EIS) and/or endoscopic variceal ligation (EVL), 36 patients who underwent Hassab's operation for residual or recurrent gastroesophageal varices after EIS and/or EVL were reviewed. Twenty-six patients had gastroesophageal varices, 5 patients had esophageal varices, and 5 patients had gastric varices. In most cases, esophageal varices showed Lm (55%) and F2 (58%), and gastric varices show Lg-cf (43%) and F2 (47%). Ninety-seven percent of esophageal varies and 36% of gastric varices were positive for red color sign (RC sign). Post-operative endoscopy revealed that esophageal varices completely disappeared in 29 of 36 cases, and gastric varices did in all cases. No cases died of bleeding or rupture of varices, although 13 cases died of liver failure or hepatocellular carcinoma. It is concluded that combined therapy of EIS and Hassab's operation is effective for residual or recurrent varices after endoscopic treatment.
