Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate participant responses to the importance of “the Japanese version of the Cancer Needs Questionnaire–Young People” and the associated trends. After responding to the questionnaire, participants were asked to provide an open-ended response regarding the importance of the questionnaire and the reasons for their responses. Of the 87 participants, the text data of 36 who responded to the open-ended questions were analyzed. Responses regarding the importance of the scale were categorized into seven core categories, including opinions on the scales themselves, such as [requests for the structure and wording of the questionnaire] and [requests for the content of the questions], as well as [getting the opportunity to know their own needs] and [expectations that this questionnaire will help improve medical care]. The trend analysis of participant needs revealed that the highest need was “talking to individuals my age who had a similar experience,” followed by “information specifically designed for me,” and “eating delicious foods.” Although this questionnaire requires further improvement, it has a certain level of demand and significance. Furthermore, adolescent and young adult patients with cancer still face many problems in their treatment environments and daily lives. We hope this questionnaire will improve the medical environment and provide social support.
