Abstract

We investigated the prescription situation of lower extremity orthoses in hemiplegic patients after stroke, retrospectively from 2007 to 2018, in a convalescent rehabilitation ward (CRW). The ratio of the patients whom orthoses were prescribed for among all hemiplegic patients was 12%, and double upright ankle foot orthosis (DU-AFO) and knee ankle foot orthosis (KAFO) accounted for about 80% of the total orthoses. The average period from the onset of illness to the prescription of orthoses was from 30 to 40 days in every year, and there was no significant change through the 12 years. In examination according to the type of orthosis, DU-AFO and KAFO were prescribed at an early stage after the onset of illness. The walking ability at the time of discharge of patients prescribed KAFO was significantly lower in comparison with those of patients prescribed other orthoses. This study clarifies the annual change in the prescription time and type of orthosis for hemiplegic patients in CRW and the fact that orthoses were prescribed for treatment at an early stage after the onset of illness.
