Abstract
Salt-tolerant reed (Phragmites communis) translocates Na+ from roots to roots via shoot base, and prevents Na+ transport from roots to upper part. Our previous works revealed that reed translocated Na+ from roots treated with NaCl to non-treated roots, but rice did not. The tissue which translocates Na+ was shoot within 1 cm adjacent to roots. Here we present candidates of Na+ transporter genes playing a role about Na+ translocation in shoot base. PCR primers were designed from consensus sequences of OsNHX1 or SOS1. cDNA from seedlings of reed was used as a PCR template. Northern-blot analysis using OsNHX1-like fragment or SOS1-like fragment as probes revealed that expression of OsNHX1-like genes were induced by NaCl treatment in shoot base, and that of SOS1-like genes were weak and induced by NaCl treatment in upper part. Comparison of expression pattern between reed and rice is undergoing.
