Abstract
The maximum quantum yield in dark-adapted leaves (Fv/Fm) is widely used as an indicator of photoinhibition. However, it is not known how the decrease in Fv/Fm is related to the rate of whole photosynthesis. In addition, the photosynthetic characteristics of the leaves with low Fv/Fm have not been examined. In this study, we examined the photosynthetic characteristics of leaves exposed to low temperature and high irradiation (15oC, 1500 μmol m-2 s-1) by simultaneous measurements of Chl fluorescence, P700+ absorbance and gas exchange.
When the Fv/Fm decreased, both CO2 assimilation rate at ambient and elevated CO2 partial pressures decreased. In addition, J(PSII) (PFD×α×ΔF/Fm') decreased more largely than J(PSI) (P700+/(ΔAmax×k)). This suggests the possibility that the cyclic electron transport around PSI occurs in the leaves with low Fv/Fm caused by low temperature and high irradiance.
