Abstract
Beech (Fagus crenata) is deciduous broad-leaved tree species and shows different forest regeneration between the Japan Sea type (JS) and the Pacific Ocean type (PO). When JS and PO seedlings were grown under shade cloth and then transferred to high-light condition (HL) and low-light condition (LL), only JS transferred to HL turns its leaf color to pale green. JS in HL showed that the levels of D1-protein in photosystem II declined, resulting in decreasing in CO2- and light-saturated photosynthesis and ETR, while PO maintained high activities. The analysis of the area over the fluorescence induction kinetics showed that PO acclimated to HL by increasing in the relative abundance of PS IIα center, while JS have low acclimation capacity to HL. These results indicate that PO has high acclimation capacity of photosystem II to high-light environment and JS damages by photoinhibiton due to continuous sun-light exposure.
