Abstract
In recent years, it has been emerging that the defense systems of plants and animals, especially innate immunity of animals, share various similarity. It is now clear that the defense systems based on the recognition of characteristic molecules to various microbes (so-called pathogen-associated molecular pattern; PAMPs) such as flagellin, LPS, chitin and beta-glucan, are present in both plants and animals. At least in some cases, plant utilizes structurally/functionally similar molecular machinery to animal innate immunity for the recognition of PAMPs and the following signaling, suggesting the evolutionary conserved nature of these defense systems in both kingdoms.
In this presentation, characteristics of several elicitors, such as chitin, beta-glucan and LPS, for suspension-cultured rice cells, putative receptors for these molecules, and the downstream signaling will be discussed in the context of PAMPs recognition in plants. Relationships of PAMPs recognition with R-gene mediated resistance will also be discussed.
