Abstract
CRES-T is a dominant and efficient gene silencing system which represses the expression of target gene through the sequence-independent transcriptional repression, and is consequently effective even in the presence of functionally-redundant transcription factors. To evaluate CRES-T as a tool for the modification of plant phenotypes thorough the production of flowers with novel characteristics, we started a new project named "CRES-T flowers". This project consists of following two concepts.
1) using the Arabidopsis-based "as-is" chimeric repressors to reduce labor of vector construction and plant transformation.
2) providing information necessary to apply this technology to other plant species, and also providing materials for molecular biology and breeding through the concentrated study on flowers.
Here we show some latest data on the CRES-T-applied transgenic flowers and discuss how we should approach and handle this new technology. This study is supported by the Research Project for Utilizing Advanced Technologies in Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
