Abstract
Effects of light on expression of one of the glycolytic enzymes, fructose-1.6-bisphosphate aldolase (fbaA) were investigated in Synechocystis sp. PCC6803 which grows both photoautotrophically and heterotrophically with glucose as a carbon source. The fbaA mRNA was induced by light in the presence of glucose, while glucose addition in the dark was not effective for induction of fbaA. Therefore, both light and glucose were required for the full induction of fbaA transcription.
One of the response regulators, sll1330, was demonstrated to be involved in regulation of fbaA gene expression by light and glucose. The transcript of fbaA appeared only slightly aftere light irradiation in the presence of glucose in the disruptant of this gene. The disruptant of sll1330 grew scarcely in heterotrophic condition under intermittent light but did normally in autotrophic condition. These results suggest that sll1330 is the key regulator of fbaA expression.
