Abstract
Auxins play critical roles in the regulation of plant growth and development. Indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) is the main auxin and its physiological role has been well documented. Phenylacetic acid (PAA) is also known as a naturally occurring auxin. Although PAA was detected from various plant species, not much is known about physiological roles of PAA in plants. In this study, we analyzed the metabolic pathway for PAA in plants. By LC-ESI-MS/MS analysis of PAA and possible PAA-metabolites, we found that GH3 genes encoding enzymes for IAA-amino acid conjugate synthesis most likely contribute to PAA metabolism in Arabidopsis. A possible metabolic pathway for PAA in plants will be discussed.
