This paper focuses on “sex(=sexual interaction),” and aims to[1]analyze its sociological mechanism and[2]present an analytical framework for “sexual inequality.”
The current mainstream discussions(= sociology of sexuality / sociology of intimacy / feminist sociology)are inadequate explanations of “sex” as micro sociological event. This paper mainly relies on the approach to analyze sex by regarding it as a “ritual.” Apropos this, we divide the conventional concept of “the sexual” into “sexual act,” “sex(= sexual interaction),” and “sexual relation,” according to its temporal-spatial phase. Consequently, this paper suggests that sexual excitement caused by “sexual act” is enhanced through the ritual process of sexual interaction, and that “sexual relation” renders sexual parts in the partner's body as “sacred objects” that strengthen their mutual bond.
This paper understands sexual inequality from the asymmetry of “emotional energy” among sexual actors. What is involved in this asymmetry is the “risks” that exist alongside the “sexual pleasure” in sex. Regarding this, we explain that sex has the characteristics of being made attractive by the element of its uncertainty and the violation of the sacredness of one's personality in everyday life.
Finally, we examine the significance of this paper's approach to sexual inequality by comparing it with the discussion on “sexual consent.”
