Abstract
Dermoid cyst o f ovary is seemed to be easily diagnosed by ultrasound because of it's characteristic echo-patterns.
In the present study, ultrasonography was compared with rentgenographic and pathological findings in 107 patients with ovarian dermoid cyst undergoing surgical treatment.
Mean age of patients was 37.5 (14-82) years old and 72% of them suffered from abdominal pain as caused by torsion of the tumor.
In 86% of patients, the presence of hair ball or scattered hairs were demonstrated on ultrasonogram as a high-echoic solid part or echogenic linear feature respectively. Bony or dental component was revealed only in 42% on ultrasonogram, while they were demonstrated on X-ray finding in 79%, probably because they were frequently hidden behind the acoustic suad ows caused by fatty or hairy components.
In summary, the dermoid cyst of ovary can be diagnosed by ultrasound for the presence of solid parts with smooth surface and homogeneous internal echoes and hair echoes.
